Current Trends In The U.S. Textile Industry

The past few years have seen a resurgence in U.S.-based manufacturing. The textile industry, once a driving factor of the economy, suffered greatly during manufacturing’s downturn, but the industry is making steady strides to regain its market share.

Learn More About Our Textiles

One reason for an improving outlook is that the industry is innovating and developing new fabrics to meet the demands of emerging industries and their associated applications. The climate is right for increased production in the U.S. and new businesses have been sparking the growth of the industry. With combined public and private funding, the federal government is investing in a new textiles-focused manufacturing initiative, led by the Department of Defense, to strengthen the small U.S. manufacturers that anchor the nation’s supply chains. The initiative will focus on technical textiles to ensure that America leads in the manufacturing of products stemming from fiber science, commercializing fibers and textiles with extraordinary properties, needed for advancements in today’s athletic and healthcare industries.

Of particular interest to the healthcare community is obesity. With the attention that’s been given to increased activity and exercise, many  wearable health monitoring devices have hit the market. Apex Mills has been called upon to engineer performance fabrics to be used as the structure to support these devices. Our 3D spacer fabrics are designed for maximum airflow and moisture-wicking while our solid knits can be constructed to incorporate nanotechnology.

Many apparel and footwear companies turn to us for problem-solving in their product development. One company came to us to bring their concept to life. They wanted a new footwear lining that would produce less friction between the sock and the shoe while meeting the industry’s abrasion and wear standards. Using a texturized polyester yarn especially selected for its filament count, and modifying the knitting structure, we delivered a soft, smooth fabric that met all their requirements.

All of our solid knits, mesh/netting, and 3D spacer fabrics feature characteristics that enhance the performance of workout gear and apparel. Adding comfort and breathability to apparel items such as sports bras and undergarments makes working out less irritating when working up a sweat.

Developing new ways to use textiles is a core strength  we are extremely proud of. Our focus on solving problems that enhance the performance of everyday items is what we set out to do. As the industry continues to evolve, we will be at the forefront designing and developing the newest textiles.
